We invite applications for participation in an intensive two weeks Summer School of Ethnographic Filmmaking 2015 organized by Department of Anthropology and Department of Politics and International Relations, University of West Bohemia in collaboration with the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, Central European University and Institute of Ethnology, Slovak Academy of Science and Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology University of Łódź.
The Summer School of Ethnographic Filmmaking aims to encourage young social science researchers and university lecturers of visual ethnography and visual studies to develop the practical skills needed to create ethnographic documentary films, and to provide them with experience of the whole process of filmmaking - from the initial idea and preparation of a script, through research and shooting, to editing and screening.
The Summer School is organized as a two week training programme led by professional visual anthropologists and documentary filmmakers (Klara Trenscenyi, Vlad Naumescu, Tomáš Hirt and Šimon Špidla). It will take place in the socially and culturally mixed environment of Czech-German border region, in the Sudeten bordertown of Aš (Asch), the westernmost city of the Czech Republic, from August 10 to August 22, 2015.
The courses will offer both practical and theoretical sessions. Participants will learn how to use the camera and editing software and will be familiarized with the theoretical and historical foundations of ethnographic film and visual studies, as well as with contemporary anthropological perspectives useful in visual research of various Central European socio-cultural contexts.
